Chapter Twelve

Water cascading down wall fountains and tranquil spa music fill the intimate space. Yoga mats are lined up neatly in the center on the glossy maple floor.

Anya leads the girls, dressed in matching ivory yoga pants and tops, through challenging poses.

Most look like zombies, going through the motions, but Kenley is fit and strong and thrives on the physical exertion. She needs this to keep her head straight. She relaxes into the stretches, focusing on her core and her breath. Looking up from a cobra pose, she notices an air vent in the corner of the room. It looks large enough for a slender body to fit through.

____

Kenley shows Sky what she took from the infirmary, then carefully puts the items back in her nightstand drawer. Grabbing a handful of tiny mints from a dish on top, she takes Sky into the bathroom.

“So, when you first put them in your mouth, use your tongue to tuck them up under it.” Kenley demonstrates. “Way back. Then swallow.” She opens her mouth and shows Sky how she kept the small pills hidden during the mouth check. “See? Voilà! Okay, your turn.”

Sky stumbles through it a couple of times. The girls laugh, sharing a fleeting, innocent moment together. Sky finally figures it out.

Kenley fills a cup from the faucet. “Now, try with water.”

Sky takes a drink. No problem, she’s got it. She throws her arms around Kenley. “Thank youuu. You’re the best!”

“Thank my mom. You burp fish oil just once in the eighth grade, and you figure it out real quick.”

Sky giggles. “Ewww.”

“And, have you seen the size of those pills?” Kenley smiles, thinking of her mom, then quickly shifts back. “But, hey, you’re not gonna need that skill for long.”

A voice sounds from the bedroom. “Sky.” Anya stands in the doorway. “Let’s go, dear. Prep time.”

Kenley looks quizzically at Sky.

“It’s my night,” Sky says with a touch of melancholy as she leaves with Anya.

____

The girls eat dinner together in a small dining room. Kenley sits between Sky and another girl, Miranda, who’s paler than the others, and more reserved.

Miranda hasn’t touched the food on her plate and abruptly springs out of her chair, running to the corner of the room. She kneels and throws up into a wicker basket.

Sky whispers to Kenley. “That’s like the third time this week. And she’s only been here a couple months. She was the newest girl. Before you.”

Miranda quickly returns to the table and sits in her seat.

“Are you okay?” Kenley asks quietly.

“Yeah, Miranda, what’s wrong?” Sky pipes in.

Miranda looks around nervously. “Shhh, please don’t say anything.”

“Of course not,” Sky reassures her.

A shaky Miranda tears up. “I think I might be pregnant.”

Sky’s mouth falls open. “Nooo.”

Kenley sees Anya approaching the doorway. “Heads up. Madame warden.” Kenley discreetly scoops some of Miranda’s food onto her own plate. A grateful Miranda catches on and wipes her mouth with a napkin.

____

Kenley and Sky sit on their beds, talking quietly about Miranda. With her freshly waxed, glistening legs outstretched on the bed, Sky wears the familiar ivory silk kimono robe.
